Day 10 sigiriya to Kandy via Dambulla 5 August

Little sleep in and breakfast by shanti about 7.30.
The little man is coming by 8.30.

Our first stop today is the Dambulla cave temples about half an hour away from sigiriya.

This a complex of 5 caves full of statues of Buddha’s and kings.
Cave 5 also has a nod towards Hinduism.
Quite spectacular and each cave has roofs covered with the most amazing frescoes.

Of course to reach these caves we climbed more stairs, 420 odd and about 160m above the car park.
Over the hill but our driver insisted of driving us is the golden Buddha and pagoda.
Apparently the biggest Buddha in the world!!

As it turns out it became an eventful trip to Kandy.
The traffic/ driving is not surprisingly crazy. We spend a lot of time trying to avoid looking ahead.
We narrowly miss a tuk tuk in front only to be whacked in the back by the one behind us.
Everyone ok in our car but we quickly jumped out to check on the occupants of the tuk tuk.
Unfortunately an old feller took the brunt. Prob injured knee and broken wrist.
Very efficient to watch the locals tho’,another tuk tuk hailed and off he went to the Matale hospital.

A lovely local man came to check on us as well, offering us the comfort of his home, how nice.

Polic arrived as did insurance assessor and after a lot of photos and head bobbling we were on our way again.

Arrived in Kandy; big, bit dirty, perhaps even run down but so many tourists. We find our accommodation, bit run down on first impressions but it is above a bakery. The man tuning it is SO helpful, shows us on a map on the phones various sights and useful places to know. We get a coffee and cake🤭 then head to Arthur’s seat for views across the city and lake.

We retire to the victory hotel for a beer and stay for dinner.
